Materials Needed

Florist wire 18 gauge, white
Tulle (net) remnant
White fabric or ribbon flowers, leaves, or other adornments (You may, of course, choose to use ivory or colourful flowers and leaves to reflect your own personality)
Pearl beads, if desired
Glue gun (lower temperature is safer)
Glue sticks for above
White dental floss OR strong thread

Instructions

1) Measure the length of wire you want for your headpiece. You may want a full crown, or a smaller tiara. The example shown is a smaller tiara-sized crown, using 45 centimeters (18 inches) of wire as the base.

2) Form the wire into a hoop. Use the dental floss to tie the ends together - this makes a more smooth product, rather than twisting the ends (though you may do so if you prefer). To do this, you can use one of two methods:

a) tie a regular, overhand knot in the middle of the thread around the two ends. Pull the thread ends under, and tie on the other side. Pull them back to the top, and continue tying (over, then under) until the wire is secure. This is the easier method.

b) grasp one end of the floss with your left hand. Create a loop to the right, and tuck the base of the loop under your thumbnail so it does not move (see photo). With your right hand, wrap the longer end of the floss around the two ends AND the loop several times, until at least once centimeter or ½ inch is tightly wrapped. Thread the long end of the floss through the loop, pulling down with your right hand (see photo). Pull the short end of the floss with your left hand, which will bring the loop under the wrap and tighten it. Trim the excess from both ends. This method is less easy at first, but provides a tidier look.

3) Cut a piece of wire that will act as the upper support for your crown. The example shown uses a 23 centimeter or 9 inch upper support. Using one of the methods above, or by twisting the wire, secure the wire to your base hoop. The middle of the support should be approximately 1-3 inches tall, depending on your preference.

4) Cut a piece of tulle that will fit the frame. The example shown uses a 5x25 centimeter or 2x 9 ½ inch piece of tulle.

5) Using the hot glue gun, put a bead of glue along the wire frame that will secure the tulle. Be very careful when using hot glue! You must work quickly because the glue sets fast. Pull the tulle smooth. When the glue is set, trim the excess tulle. (see picture of frame).

6) Glue fabric or ribbon leaves, flowers, or other decorations to your frame. You can either begin at one side and work across, or begin at the ends and work inward with the leaves or other background pieces. Glue larger flowers over them, covering the tulle and wire. You may choose to have each side mirror the other, or you may choose balanced asymmetry. Go with your own sense of style.
